Two pocket amps. Same general idea. Very different feature sets. Here’s how to choose.

So you’re looking at pocket amps. You’ve probably narrowed it down to these two. Now let’s figure out which one actually makes sense for you.
I’ve written about both of these on the site already. The Sonicake Smart Box got its own piece, and the M-Vave Pocket AMP got a full review too.
But the question I keep getting is… if someone’s choosing between them right now in 2026, which one should they go for?
Fair question.
Here’s my two cents.
First, the thing they have in common.
Both clip onto your strap.
Both run on USB-C.
Both give you roughly 4 hours of battery. 7 with the M-Vave.
Both have a 1/4 inch instrument input and a 3.5mm headphone out for silent practice. Both will let you play guitar in a hotel room at midnight without anyone knocking on your door. That core use case… silent portable practice with decent amp tone… both of them do it. The differences are everything beyond that.

So Who Should Buy Which One
Buy the Sonicake Smart Box if…
You want simple and affordable

Budget is the priority. You just need decent amp tone and silent headphone practice without a learning curve. Plug in, play, done. It’s the no-fuss choice and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Buy the M-Vave Pocket AMP if…
You want more room to grow

You’re going to want to edit presets, load custom IRs eventually, use it as a recording interface, or you play bass too. The M-Vave has a longer ceiling and the Bluetooth app makes tone editing actually comfortable.
If the Smart Box is available and the price difference is significant enough to matter to your budget right now, get the Smart Box and don’t feel bad about it. It does the main job. But if you’re close enough in price that the M-Vave is reachable, the extra features are real and you will eventually use them. The Bluetooth app alone changes how you interact with the device.
Both are worth owning. If I’m being completely straight with you though… the M-Vave is the one I’d buy today if I was starting fresh. The feature gap is wide enough that the extra pesos make sense. That said the Joyo Jam Buddy II is still my daily favorite of the whole bunch, but that’s a different article.
