October 27, 2018. That’s the first time I saw Payazo live.
We were slated to play at Suazo for the Handuraw sa Baul gig. It was also the first time we got to share the bill with Tramonto and Tradecraft.
Among the four bands, we were the least known. Heck, everyone was probably scratching their heads wondering who we were (we still see question marks whenever we play). So anyway, back to Payazo. We’ll be covering the other 2 bands in the future.
When you first see these guys together, there’s no mistaking them for anything other than being a band. They walk like rockstars, talk like rockstars, exude an aura of rockstardom. Yep, you know a band’s gonna go far if they haven’t played a single note yet and they’ve already captured everyone’s attention. It’s like Payazo hired a really good PR manager.
We had just finished our set and due to exhaustion, I just wanted to sit back and relax.
Payazo does not let you relax.
Payazo‘s sound is brash and unapologetically nu-metal. No matter how you twist it, it’s the sound that evokes comparisons to Wilabaliw, Greyhoundz & Queso.
Oh yeah, they got my attention alright. What did it was how clean and properly executed their guitarwork was. One of the things I hated about local NuMetal guys is that they hide sloppy work behind layers of distortion. Not Payazo. Their music will make your ears bleed if you stand near enough to any one of their amps but this is a band above all the other NuMetal bands I’ve witnessed live. And how good are they really? Well great enough to make their heroes jam with them. There’s a video out there of them with Reg and Ian Tayao jamming. Yeah they’re that good!
Further research about the band lead me down how they were formed and it was a hilarious interview which explained how much the band has changed over the years. They’ve got a lot of material out there. This is a very busy band. And judging from how many people have liked and followed them on Facebook, I think it’s about time Payazo gets a bigger stage. It’s time we stop hiding this band from the rest of the world.
