The Donner HUSH X Live Might Be the Best One Yet

And yes, I am saving up for it as we speak… $439.99…
I get a lot of guitar-related emails. Epiphone. Kramer. Fender. PRS.
Only Donner has consistently managed to make me jump up from whatever I’m doing and actually pay attention.
The last time that happened was when Joyo reached out about the Jam Buddy II… and that’s still my favorite piece of compact gear on my desk right now.
But Donner’s HUSH line has been doing something to me for a while now.
I’ve written about the HUSH-X. I’ve written about the HUSH-X Pro.
I’ve been going back and forth between those and the Leego headless for months now, mostly because of extreme poverty and the very real possibility that my wife would end my life if I brought home another new guitar.
And then Donner announced the HUSH X Live.

And I am, once again, in trouble… if I push through with my dastardly plan.
Donner Hush X Live
If you’ve been following the HUSH line at all, most of what’s on this guitar will feel familiar. Headless body, travel-friendly dimensions, silent practice via headphone jack, onboard amp modeling, the proven Donner headless tuning system that’s held up for thousands of users with minimal pitch deviation.
The DNA is the same.
But the HUSH X Live has one new trick that I think is genuinely clever.
It has a speaker built into the lower section of the guitar and it’s detachable.
That sounds like a small thing until you think about it for a second.
The Enya Nova Go has had a built-in speaker for a while and that’s been one of its main advantages over the HUSH line… plug in and play anywhere, no amp, no cable, just the guitar.
The problem is a permanently attached speaker adds weight and you’re carrying it whether you need it or not.
The HUSH X Live’s answer to that is a modular speaker that clips on in about one second and comes off just as fast when you don’t need it.
Best of both worlds… lightweight headless travel guitar when you want it that way, instant amp-equipped practice companion when you don’t want to bother with a real amp setup.
The speaker also works as a standalone unit on a tabletop, not just attached to the guitar.
So if you’d rather set it down in front of you while you play, that’s an option too.
And there’s an additional jack on the speaker itself so you can still run into an external amp and keep the onboard effects in the chain.
Headphone jack and USB are also on board so silent recording and late-night practice are still fully covered.
The one nitpick I have about it is that you still need a short cable to connect the guitar to the speaker.
It’s a very, very, very, very, very minor thing and I understand the engineering reasons for it, but part of me hoped they’d figure out a wireless or magnetic contact solution.
Still… it’s a nitpick, not a dealbreaker.
What I think Donner should do is release the detachable speaker as an add-on accessory for existing HUSH X and HUSH X Pro owners and maybe all the other Hush models.
That lower bout design with the speaker attachment could breathe new life into guitars people already own.
That’s a smart product move if they’re listening.
Build and Specs
Seven-piece African mahogany neck-through construction on this one.

Neck-through design for better sustain, better resonance, and a tighter, more stable feel under your hands.
Standard C neck profile, which is the comfortable rounded shape most guitar players are already used to. Fretboard is HPL Roasted Maple. Body front, back, and sides are all mahogany.
The HUSH X ’23 Original Alnico V pickups are doing H-S configuration here… one humbucker, one single coil. Alnico V magnets give you that balance between single-coil brightness and humbucker thickness, which is why Donner calls them versatile.
Nickel-plated steel strings. 31.1 inches total length, 12.7 inch width.
Lightweight enough for overhead bin travel and comfortable enough for long sitting or standing sessions, the natural body fit is designed to reduce fatigue either way.

I’ve been dreaming about having a HUSH X or HUSH X Pro for a while now.
Imagining how I’d use it for practice sessions with a small speaker, how I’d travel with it without the usual guitar-in-a-bag anxiety.
The HUSH X Live is the version of that dream that makes the most sense to me because the detachable speaker solves the one thing the previous models couldn’t do without an extra accessory.
I’m looking forward to buying this one as soon as I can put the funds together.

Wife permitting…
