On October 4, 2024, Mic 1 Family KTV Live Room is going to host the New Vibe Ph Mindanao Tour 2024 featuring bands Tanya Markova, Agaw Agimat and Olkisrotom. Local bands Loo’sid and AcidRadius will serve as front acts and warm the crowd up.
Tanya Markova
If there’s one band I kind of “fan boyed” over back in 2009 – 2010, it’d have to be Tanya Markova.
Although I’m not really a fan of KISS or other bands that wear heavy makeup onstage, what they did was absolutely a stroke of genius. Ok, maybe I wanted to wear some makeup when I first saw Mudvayne’s “Not Falling” video or don a mask ala Slipknot, but I never really had the guts to take on a new persona and go onstage.
Now here are 8 fantastic musicians with kabuki paint, amazing songs and a very entertaining live show. Tanya Markova.
And my band is one of the front acts.
It’s something out of a dream.
I am definitely looking forward to singing along to “Picture, Picture”, “Linda Blair”, “Stranded”, and “Disney” to name a few of their songs.
But who is Tanya Markova?
To be honest, I don’t really know who each individual member is.
But that’s the beauty of this band.
It’s not the individuals that bring crowds to their shows but the entire collective because they have far surpassed the identity of being a band and have reached an iconic status as a brand that promises to provide entertainment and enjoyment to whomever comes to watch.
The band has had many lineup changes but it doesn’t matter. They still manage to rope in top talent to fill the empty spots and continue to churn out hit after hit.
So for those who got wind of Tanya Markova’s brief visit to Davao on October 4, they’re in for a treat!
Agaw Agimat
I was 14 or 15 when I first heard Agaw Agimat and I’d have to say I was immediately hooked because they were different from the male-dominated bands during the 90s. And that was over the radio.
I wasn’t disappointed when I finally saw what they looked like on TV. I was immediately captivated by the singer, QT Paduano’s look. She was thin, morena, had a bob cut, and her voice was like an angelic activist calling the youth to arms. She also performed barefoot and twirled like a madwoman onstage.
She reminded me of a young Nora Aunor.
I was in love.
I bought all their albums. Well the few that they released back then.
And then they just disappeared.
I didn’t really know what happened to them.
I’d like to say I was devastated but I really wasn’t.
But I was happy to see Lee Nadela in Slapshock. He was one of those bassists that I originally admired after Gibz Carilla, Domz Anacion, Bopip Paraguya, Mally Paraguya and Mon Legaspi.
So, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that my band was supposed to play as front act for Agaw Agimat on October 4. Pleasantly surprised and at the same time, disappointed.
You see, QT is no longer with them.
But it seems like there’s still a Nadela manning the helm so maybe I can squeeze in a few questions and find out what happened to the band, why they disappeared and why they resurfaced now.
For those who don’t know or are too young to remember Agaw Agimat, they were a hot commodity back in the 90s. they were also very elusive and would only play select gigs where they could bring out their messages to the public asking for real change.
The new Agaw Agimat (I just watched a few videos) seems to be okay. I mean it’s not like the original band which was raw and angsty and just a little bit over the top with their anger (but with a good mixture of pop and punk sensibilities).
This new one is more polished.
Granted, the vocalist is far from QT but she does have her own style. I mean she doesn’t really stray from the original format of the band so I guess it’s okay.
Maybe old die-hard fans should at least give the new Agaw Agimat a chance?
Olkisrotom
Try saying their name three times in quick succession. Yep, that’s a tongue twister all right.
Olkisrotom is basically motorsiklo spelled backwards, right? Motorsiklo is Filipino for motorcycle.
So, I assumed they were a bunch of bikers.
And I was expecting a bunch of motorcycle songs. Or songs meant for riding.
Nope.
But I was still pleasantly surprised with just how good their songs were.
Paquipot Diaz is a really fun song. The intro immediately reels you in and keeps you attention throughout the entirety of the song. Then there’s the anthemic “Lipad”. It’s just a great song.
I’m looking forward to seeing this band perform live. I’m also wondering how they’re going to fit all seven members onstage.
Loo’sid
Loo’sid is a Davao-based band that’s been performing in and around the metro since the 90s.
They also feature amazing musicians within their roster.
Loo’sid is one of those bands that I enjoy watching and at the same time want to be a part of but know that if I do that, I’d change the entire dynamic of the group. Paul Ancheta is one of those guitarists that I really like watching live. I just find him highly entertaining.
I know they had an old vocalist but when Martin (former Toad River vocalist) got on board as their vocalist, it seemed like he elevated their performance level to new heights with his voice. There are very few bands that I believe Martin is a great fit and Loo’sid seems to be the greatest fit for him.
Oh and we also share a drummer with this band.
AcidRadius
Well, my band is going on first to open the night. We’ve already done an extensive amount of pre-production to make sure we give a memorable performance on October 4.
We don’t want to be the chump in this lineup of great bands and musicians.
