10 years.

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I first met the trio that initially comprised the band Spooky Serna.

Back then, they played lengthy instrumentals that eventually crossed over to a more palatable pop heavy, still lengthy, songs.

Catchy too.

I can still remember going up to them and striking up a conversation because I was drooling over the contents of Leo’s pedalboard.

I can remember drowning in the music they produced out of those simple amplifiers we had to endure back in the day.

The gigs where we shared the bill.

The time we went to Cotabato together.

The time they came willingly to become guests in my podcast for Hugyaw.

Oh man so many memories….

And now here comes another one.

Their music video launch for the song Ilusyon which I am truly excited to see.

But for those who don’t know who Spooky Serna, here’s what you need to know about them.

Who is Spooky Serna?

This isn’t the first time I wrote about Spooky Serna. I wrote about them way back in the day.

I don’t think it’ll be the last time either.

You see, I’d have to admit there is a bit of a bias here because I would call myself a fan of the band and their music.

Spooky Serna is a Davao-based band that started out as a power trio composed of Joey, Leo and Peter back in 2014. By the time I met them in 2016, they had somewhat perfected their trippy instrumental music that I immensely enjoyed.

It didn’t take long before they started moving in a more poppy direction. Pop with a mix of rock and emo influences in it.

During the pandemic they became a four piece with another guitarist to back Leo’s already rich guitar work before becoming the 5 piece they are today with the much needed keyboards and synths to make the already rich mix even richer.

Naglalahong Ilusyon

There are two songs that Spooky Serna is known for. Naglalaho and Ilusyon.

The first one is definitely my favorite. And every time they play it, I can’t help myself but sing along to it. It’s a catchy song. And once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.

But it’s the second song that’s the reason why I’m writing about them today.

You see, they’re about to release their music video for Ilusyon.

The release date is on October 24, 2026 at Suazo where they’re considered a mainstay.

With them on that night are:

MUTE from Tagum, a progressive rock, metal and melodic instrumental band very much like how Spooky Serna first started so expect an auditory experience like no other when this band hits the stage.

8-A, another must see band because of their catchy melodies. To be honest I just really wanna see Kay-ar do a guitar clinic live with his mastery of the instrument. That plus how tight the bass and drums lock in is something you have to see live to understand what magic a real band can do onstage.

The Extra Curriculars… hmmm… this’ll be a good opportunity to see this fun duo perform live I guess. I haven’t seen them live yet so I’m looking forward to enjoying a fun night at Suazo.

And then a DJ set from N2K

So looks like this’ll be a fun night of pop, rock, some nice beats and a whole lotta dancing. Yeah! PHP250 at the gate seems like a small price to pay for what looks to be an awesome night that you’ll remember for years to come.

Sing Along to Ilusyon

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Ilusyon music video launch is going to be an epic one and everyone should go and see it as another part of Spooky Serna’s musical journey unfolds.

Here’s an incentive if you do go and watch: you can sing along with these lyrics.

Ilusyon

Spooky Serna

Panalangin ko sana’y dinggin

Na mapansin man lamang aking pagtingin

So… see you on October 24, 2026 at Suazo?

Can’t go? Why not support the band remotely through this:

Disclaimer

The band didn’t pay me to write this. Nor have they paid me for anything in the past for writing about them. I’m writing this from a perspective of a fan.
