Okay. I had to get up to write about this. The announcement came in and boom — Tamad si Juan won the Red Horse Beer Pambansang Muziklaban!

I was waiting for that result and when it dropped, I literally could not stay in bed. I had to get up and write about it immediately.

I have a personal stake in this because Tamad si Juan was one of the very first bands I ever wrote about on this site.

Way back in June of 2019, I published a piece about them when they were doing their thing at Gio’s Crib right here in Davao City.

I saw something in them then.

I knew they were a band to be reckoned with.

And tonight, the whole nation just found out what I already knew.

No longer just Davao City’s pride and joy — Tamad si Juan is now a band worthy of being shared all over the archipelago.

Who Is Tamad Si Juan?

Let’s get one thing straight: there is absolutely nothing lazy about this band.

The name Tamad Si Juan plays off one of Filipino culture’s most beloved folk archetypes — the story of Juan’s legendary laziness that’s been passed down through generations. But the irony is glorious.

This band seems hell-bent on proving they are the complete opposite of that preconceived notion.

Tamad Si Juan, or TSJ as the Davao music community affectionately calls them, is one of the hardest working bands to ever come out of this city.

Their sets are high-energy, loud, and tight. They are veterans of the Davao music scene and every single one of them knows what it takes to reach the top of the musical heap. And tonight, they reached the very top.

The Band

What makes TSJ tick is the chemistry between each member. There’s no weak link in this lineup. Although the only ones left of the original lineup are Reg and Kram, the ones who filled in the empty slots more than made up for those who vacated their positions.

When you watch TSJ perform live, you understand that this is not a band of individuals. They work as one unit — like a machine — and Reg roars on top of it all with a voice that fills the room ten times over.

Behind him is the equally charismatic figure of Kram quietly making his guitar soeak what’s on his mind and heart. His playful, expressive guitar work dances on top of the rhythm.

The Road to the National Stage

This win didn’t happen overnight. Tamad si Juan fought their way through the Red Horse Beer Pambansang Muziklaban 2025 competition — one of the most grueling and prestigious band competitions in the Philippines — stage by stage, round by round, city by city.

The journey went like this:

  • Tamad si Juan entered the nationwide Eliminations phase and emerged as the representative for Mindanao.
  • They battled through the Semi-Finals to secure their spot in the Grand Finals.
  • On March 14, 2026, at the Filinvest City Events Grounds in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, they took the stage against four other finalists from across the country.

Their competition at the Grand Finals was no joke. Here’s who they went up against:

To be honest, I also had my eyes on Themata as a contender. These guys came from Tacloban City and I knew how competitive the music scene is in Tacloban having been part of that music scene too.

The Power of a Tamad Si Juan Live Show

I want people who’ve never seen TSJ live to understand what this band is on a stage. When they first got onstage back when I first covered them, the original lineup had a presence that no one in the room could ignore.

That energy — that force — it doesn’t go away.

And over the years, as the lineup evolved, so did the band’s live show change.

Their live shows became more powerful.

The kind of powerful where you feel it in your chest.

Where the crowd is sweating right along with the band. Where you look around and everyone in the room has the same expression on their face — that look of disbelief at what they’re witnessing. TSJ has always been a crowd favorite precisely because they give everything they have every single time they step on a stage.

They played mostly at Gio’s Crib back in their earlier years, delivering two solid hours of music to deafen the appreciative crowd. Two hours. That’s not a gig — that’s a marathon. And they ran it every time.

Years before they ever set foot on a national stage, they had already proven themselves as a force to be reckoned with right here in Davao. The city knew. The fans knew. And now the rest of the Philippines knows too.

Why This Win Matters for Davao and Mindanao Music

The Red Horse Beer Pambansang Muziklaban has been running since 1999. Past champions include legendary names like Mayonnaise (2004), Woopis from Palawan (2017), and Happy Three Friends (2019). This competition is the Superbowl of Filipino rock bands.

Winning it puts you on a very short, very elite list.

And now Tamad si Juan from Davao City is on that list.

This matters beyond just the trophy.

The Davao music scene — the entire Mindanao music scene — has always been a largely untapped landscape of talent.

Bands here have the skill, the heart, and the drive, but the industry spotlight rarely makes it this far south. TSJ’s win changes that narrative. It tells every young band in Davao, in Mindanao, in the whole south: you belong on that national stage too.

Here’s what makes this current lineup something special:

  • Every member is a seasoned musician with deep roots in the Davao music scene.
  • They’ve played in and alongside other respected bands — Nairud, MOAWH, Cotton Candy — proving they’re deeply woven into the fabric of local music.
  • This isn’t a band of newcomers chasing a dream. This is a band of veterans who’ve put in the work, paid their dues, and now have the trophy (and money) to show for it.
  • Their win is a statement that Mindanao rock music is not just alive — it is champion-level.

Final Word

I said it back in 2019: Tamad si Juan had the potential to be big contenders in conquering the largely untapped landscape of talent in Mindanao.

I believed it then.

I wrote it.

And tonight, they didn’t just conquer Mindanao — they conquered the whole country.

The name says tamad.

The band says otherwise.

This band ain’t lazy at all.

Never was.

Never will be.

And now they’re champions.

Congratulations, TSJ. Davao City is loud and proud tonight. Rak on.
