If there’s one song in my entire catalog of songs made or written, this has got to be the one that I consistently use to entice great musicians to come be a part of my band.

This was the song that towards the tail end of the original AcidRadio lineup kept us going. This is the same song that helped me build a new lineup here in Davao City. And eventually, the one that helped me land my current bandmates to become my friends.

But this song wasn’t really fully fleshed out until the last days of the original AcidRadio. Back then they couldn’t really get my idea about this simple song that really just aims to drive this point: If I’m not going to be in a relationship with you, then it’s better not to be in any relationship at all.

Pretty shallow, right?

I didn’t need to create entire sections of lyrics. All I needed was a strong message that I could sing over a powerful riff.

And I distinctly remember that I was inspired by the words “ito ang tama!” by Red Horse Beer. We were slated to enter the Muziklaban way back 2005? Or was it 2006? 2007?

I don’t really remember.

And I had to put together this short, slogan-y type of song that reflected those words.

So I hummed the chorus first and then came up with the intro riff after. This took me probably a day or two to flesh out.

Now the verse chords, I figured it out together with Quirino Lacambra IV, Kym’s younger brother and then guitarist at that time.

I knew I wanted something chromatic.

Simple.

Tribal.

We got it after a few hours. I had a good working relationship with Keno (Quirino Lacambra IV) and Kym and we would be able to bang out song ideas in a matter of hours with just a single guitar and a lot of smokes.

The Drunken Solo Part

I knew I wanted something that kind of served as a reflection of a drunken person stumbling through an alleyway for the solo. I initially planned it out but was unable to execute it during the demo of the song.

The one who actually captured that essence was Jean Paul Verona who took some of my ideas and crafted a really nice descending, chaotic line that made my simple drunken adlib dream a thousand times better than what it was originally.

Glenn eventually transformed the solo into his very own version in the released form of the song. His solo retains the same “drunken” feel but also adds a little menace and playfulness in it.

Whenever it’s time for him to play it onstage, I just close my eyes and get lost in inebriation despite not having had a drop of liquor in years.

Towards the end of the song we also have a “breakdown” that I added which I knew I took inspiration from somewhere. It’s just a groove laden breakdown that I like which ends the song nicely.

We Like Playing This Song

This is the song that we, AcidRadius, as a band unanimously vote as part of our setlist every time we go onstage.

It’s just a fun song to play.

We had fun recording this at Slawndwave.

The final version features Glenn on guitars, Mitch on bass, me on guitars and vocals and Kisstong on drums.

Drummers who’ve worked on this track in the past tried to get that tribal feel that Kym laid down in the intro but no one’s really gotten it down like he did.

So far, it also seems to be doing well on Spotify.

Here’s the song: Kung Di Rin Lang

Adlib

Tama, tama, tama nga sila’ng lahat

‘wag na, ‘wag na, ‘wag mo na’ng pilitin pa

Tama, tama, tama nga sila’ng lahat

Tama, tama, tama nga sila’ng lahat

‘wag na, ‘wag na, ‘wag mo na’ng pilitin pa

Tama, tama, tama nga sila’ng lahat
