The Wrong Children are now composed of new members. Wait for the new update here.

A few years ago, I fell in love with a couple of boys.

They were the Wrong Children.

Hmmm… that should be enough to raise some eyebrows.

Ok, that’s it for the day. Thank you for visiting the Musika Wabad page. Keep liking, sharing and inviting people here.

Naw… just kiddin!

Ok, here we go.

I just recently interviewed the band The Wrong Children and I can’t say that I haven’t missed these guys.

For those who don’t know who The Wrong Children are, they’re a Davao based punk band. They’re one of the youngest bands in Davao city with high energy performances easily winning crowds over with their vibrancy on stage and songs about “fun” topics. I personally like “One-some”. I don’t know all of the words but it’s a fun song to move along to.

A few years back, when Zero 82 Lokal was still called ZLeaf, I had the opportunity to play a gig with these kids. Oh, we were all thinner then, with longer hair and armed with the vibrancy of youth as ammo.

They quickly gained the attention of people as their energetic shows captivated the crowd in attendance. They weren’t perfect. But piss and vinegar and that rockstar attitude are the biggest reasons why people come to see a band. Despite their young age, I couldn’t help but become a fan.

And then they disappeared.

And I thought that was that. The only one still active was Michael Yev Saripa who played the drums in Dorothy Must Die. But Dorothy Must Die and The Wrong Children were two very different bands.

I chalked that up to just another one of those gifted young bands that quickly rose in popularity and quickly disappeared. Every now and then they’d come into my mind and I wondered what they were up to.

So it’s just timely that I’d been given a show through Hugyaw Online and The Wrong Children decided enough was enough with their forced hiatus. Khaliff contacted me and we agreed we’d get their story out.

Khaliff accompanied by Keene and Ares sat down for what would end up to be a conversation about life, love, self-love, losing one’s self, finding it back, hate, betrayal, anger, disappointment, rekindling old relationships, strengthening the bonds of friendship, acceptance, humility and finally, redemption.

Check out what they look like now on my Instagram

We talked about what happened, why they disappeared, Khaliff’s health struggles and finding motivation back through sports. They’re no longer the thin kids I knew a few years back. I guess they’re men now. They’re still the Wrong Children though. Their songs are still punk and they still sing about playing with one’s “pleasure stick” and one night stands.

It’s great to hear they’ve got new songs and will be recording their stuff soon. Which reminds me… I gotta bring them to Jireh Recordings.

It’s a great story that I hope I was able to bring out and give justice to with that episode. We were laughing a lot. It was great seeing the kids all grown up. I felt like a proud uncle.

… Damn I’m old …

The Wrong Children will be playing once again at Gio’s Crib with Eye of Horus this August 3, 2019. If you want to see one fun punk band, you won’t go wrong with the er… Wrong Children.

So you may be wondering, why of all the bands in Davao, I ended up liking The Wrong Children. Like I said, they weren’t perfect onstage. I can’t even remember the number of times I wanted to get up and conduct in front of them to get them back in time with the metronome or at least with each other. Bad notes? Oooffff! These guys were playing bad notes all over the place! Detuned guitars. Bad sounding amps. Boring stage play. They had that all when they started. I just kept talking to them and giving them pieces of advice here and there about how to improve. Some they took, some they ignored.

Slowly but surely, they got better and better.

I just wanted to help and it was undeniable that these kids had that X-factor going for them. They looked great on stage and they didn’t care about what they were singing. Most importantly, they were having fun.

They evoked memories of me and my childhood.

My best friends and I formed a band and we had been very successful (at that time). We even managed to win crowds over in Manila.

But when we started, there was this guy, we’ll call him “Condom-Head” who put us down every step of the way. I wonder where he is now? Probably a bitter old fool with nothing to show for it. We managed to get over that and my buddy Jean Paul Verona even has a few Awit Award nominations to his name.

The rest have chosen quieter lives. We still pick up our instruments every now and then and remember the fun of sharing the stage with friends and playing as a unit. A band against the world.
